Summer Garden Visits.

Unfortunately, the visit to David Austin Roses on June 4th has been cancelled.

There are still places available for the visit to Cottesbrooke Gardens, Northants on July 25th at 2.00pm.

This is a beautiful garden in the Northamptonshire countryside and well worth a visit (if you have already visited, I am sure you will agree it is worth a return trip). The Head Gardener will conduct a tour of the gardens. Cost is £7 for the garden tour. (homemade teas are available, but not included in the cost).

Please contact me asap if you are interested. Not to be missed! Jean Myatt 01926 451092

SOUTH MIDLANDS AREA OF NAFAS CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE SUMMER 2009

Following our Area’s great success at the Malvern Spring Show, it is time to look forward to ‘The Royal’ at Stoneleigh and wish our Show committee and competitors well for a successful Show. Neither should we forget those of you who are competing at your own local Shows. Good luck to you all.

The NAFAS Show and Competitions at the Ricoh Stadium, Coventry will soon be upon us. Thank you to all who have offered to steward and good luck to our members who have entered the competitions. John and Brenda Chennell from Earls Barton Flower Club will represent the South Midlands in the Area class. We wish them well. I hope there will be a huge number of our members there, it will be a wonderful Show and it deserves our support.

In addition to the competitions there will be demonstrations, talks, workshops, and a shopping mall (of course). Book NOW to avoid disappointment. If you have your ticket for the Gala dinner it’s time to look out the glad rags and prepare for an evening of glamour!

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the trip to the Gardens of Paris, maybe something to look forward to some other time.

Just time to book your place on one of the local garden visits - contact Catherine Carr-Pinning to reserve a place (details on the poster).

Many of our clubs are celebrating Special Anniversaries this year and I look forward to joining you at these very special events, congratulations and good wishes to you all.

Don’t forget if you can manage to have a small event to raise a few funds for Breast Cancer Care - every little helps.

Good wishes to you all and have a good summer,

Jean Myatt, Area Chairman

South Midlands: 16th Area of NAFAS

Welcome to the Web site of the South Midlands Area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. On the pages of this Website you will find a host of items dedicated to the promotion of floral art throughout our own part of UK

The South Midlands Area covers the counties of South Staffordshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, parts of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire whilst incorporating the northern borders of Oxfordshire and the very eastern edge of Gloucestershire.

We are one of twenty one areas, covering the whole of the United Kingdom and are affiliated to NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. We are also a Registered Charity (reg. no. 292789) and have 52 flower arranging clubs spread throughout the South Midlands Area.

To help you find a club close to you, we have split our Area into 4 regions, North, East, Central and finally combined the South and West as one region. To find the nearest club to you click on a region link on the left of this page.

Most flower clubs meet once a month and their events include demonstrations of flower arranging, lectures, flower festivals, competitive work, visits to gardens of special interest, flower shows and lots more!

It would be fair to say that no two clubs are identical

Interested?

If you are interested in learning more about flowers, foliage and plants and want to join like minded people, find the flower club page nearest to where you live, and make contact with them.

You will find a warm welcome from everyone involved with the South Midlands Area, both at Club level and from the Area Officers

The Area regularly hosts workshops, where members enjoy practical, fun hands-on days, presented by experts. The subjects covered are wide ranging, from crafts to Christmas themes, from current up-to-date trends to back-to-basics.

AREA DEMONSTRATORS INFORMATION NOW ON SITE

Our Area Demonstrators now have their own page on this site

Click on the Area Demonstrators header at the bottom left hand side of this page to find more details and contacts

We are hoping all demonstrators in our South Midlands Area and from other adjacent Areas, will contribute to this new page

Development

Members of our flower clubs and individual members can develop their skills as far as they wish. The Area hosts training days for aspiring floral demonstrators, judges and speakers, with successful candidates often going on to take a national qualification.Members of our flower clubs and individual members can develop their skills as far as they wish. The Area hosts training days for aspiring floral demonstrators, judges and speakers, with successful candidates often going on to take a national qualification.

For members with photographic skills and a keen eye for that winning shot, there are opportunities in the Photography Competition, judged and displayed at our Area Day meeting

The Area is very progressive. We have several nationally qualified demonstrators and our members often take high awards at national flower arranging competitions - so you can see, you will be in good hands!

Somebody once coined the phrase FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND FLOWERS. This is still applicable today. With flowers we all have lots of fun and make many new friends. Don't miss all the information contained within the web site, explore all the pages and maybe soon you will join us.

A letter from Australia

Hi All

It was good to go onto the web and see what is going on in the South Midlands Area & some familiar faces, & all the successes in competitions. I was a member of the S.M.A for many years & taught at Solihull College until we emigrated to Brisbane in Jan 2008, still keep in touch with some members.

I am still pursuing my interest in floral art. Have joined a local club & have been demonstrating within the club, am also the treasurer, already on a committee!

It is strange but it must be world -wide that clubs have difficulty in finding committee members. Have also joined FASQ & enter competitions, they also have a contemporary club along the lines of Centix so am able to learn new skills.

Queensland is celebrating 150 year anniversary this year. FASQ is holding a celebration of heritage in flowers looking forward to taking part.

Could you pass on my best wishes & for a successful 2009 for the South Midlands Area. Look forward to seeing more pictures.

Still think about The enjoyable Saturdays at workshops at Teachers association which I know has changed its name.

The weather over hear has been very warm & humid of late so not good for conditioning the flowers. Am enjoying using the tropical plant material, although lilies, carnations, and gerbera are very popular. Slowly getting familiar with the foliages. It’s a good learning curve.

Best wishes

Lynda Reynolds
