Where Rabbits Dream - Mrs Janine Hall

We were entertained in the true sense of the word at our March meeting when Mrs Janine Hall came to demonstrate.

Without giving away too many secrets, Mrs Hall used several different methods to depict her theme. As always however, the beautiful flowers took centre stage.

THIS IS OUR PLANET' - VANESSA HIGGINS

February 2010

Vanessa Higgins brought her normal mix of enthusiasm and wonderful design to our February meeting when she took us on a tour of the diverse landscapes offered by our planet.

We went from the English countryside via the desert and the jungle to the sea and finally the city.

She was ably assisted by Helen Hunter during the demonstration.

It was difficult to know which design we would choose if we were lucky enough to win a prize in the raffle!

Cocktail Hour by Mrs Sharon Possart

In October we were looking forward to welcoming Mrs Sharon Possart to our club for the first time following her qualification as an Area Demonstrator earlier this year.

As the title suggests, Sharon's demonstration centred around cocktails, and we spent a wonderful evening sharing these with her.

We started with a 'Pink Lady', a modern design in a typical cocktail glass including pink roses, lime green anthurriums and lots of aspidistra curls. This was followed by a 'Manhattan', a tall narrow design depicting the sky scrapers in New York and featuring the colours orange and lime green. We then moved on to a 'Bucks Fizz', all white lilies, gerberas and lisianthus. The next was a magnificent 'Champagne Fountain' incorporating a pyramid of glasses positively frothing with foliage and gypsophila overflowing down the side. Finally we managed to squeeze in a 'Tequila Sunrise' in oranges and reds.

We were quite intoxicated by the end of the evening, not in this instance by alcohol but by the beautiful designs that Sharon produced. It was a superb first demonstration and we hope Sharon will be back to share more of her lovely creations with us.

Floral Inspirations Mrs Jane Fox September 2009

We were delighted to welcome back Mrs Jane Fox to our September meeting and, as normal, she gave us a superb demonstration.

Jane shared with us the experiences and memories that have inspired her to create beautiful designs with flowers.

Jane began with a design in a verdigris urn complete with tassels and swags that recalled visits to one of her favourite historic houses, Chatsworth in Derbyshire. Another design in yellows and golds encircled by a metal hoop to depict the warmth of the sun illustrated Jane's love of sunshine holidays. We were taken on a walk with her dog along the canal path where Jane was inspired by the varying shades of green in the hedgerows and she recreated this in a design using ferns, phormium, molucella, lime green chrysanthemums and the most beautiful piece of driftwood. A simple galvanised container was the inspiration for a design using bright orange gladioli and deep red roses. Finally we were transported to the Dominican Republic where Jane got inspiration from the bright tropical flora and fauna on a memorable holiday.

It was a very inspiring evening for us all and we went away thinking of ways to recreate our own experiences with flowers.

July Meeting - ‘For the Love of Flower’ - Bob Harris

We were really looking forward to welcoming Bob Harris to our club in July as we knew we could expect a wonderful evening and of course he didn’t disappoint us.

Bob’s enthusiasm for floral art and flowers in general is always infectious and we were all captivated by his skill and the stunning designs he produced for us, and of course by his humorous stories.

The mixtures of colour and form in his designs were a delight and his choice of flowers and foliage was beautiful.

When it came to choosing our raffle prizes it was almost impossible to decide which arrangement we liked best.

Thanks go to Bob for an entertaining and inspiring evening.

June Meeting - ‘Spring is Sprung’ Mr Kevin Gunnell

Kevin Gunnell was due to demonstrate at our February meeting this year but unfortunately, due the heavy snow falls at that time, we were forced to cancel the meeting. You can imagine our delight when we found that Kevin was available to come for our June meeting instead.

As we had expected, the evening was superb and Kevin produced some spectacular designs. The display of flowers and plant material from Kevin’s own garden was particularly impressive, we have never seen such a wonderful selection of peonies in one arrangement before.

Thankfully our member who won the arrangement in the raffle has a house big enough to do it justice!

We were also impressed with the range, size and condition of the hosta leaves that Kevin used in several of the designs, they were magnificent. In fact the whole demonstration was excellent, and of course Kevin’s dry sense of humour caused a great deal of amusement during the evening.

We were so very pleased that we were given the opportunity to enjoy such a talented demonstrator, and we are now thinking about organising a visit to Kevin’s garden to witness his wonderful plants first hand!

April Meeting - ‘Animal Magic’’ Glenice Yates

We knew we were in for a treat at our April meeting when Glenice Yates came to present her demonstration ‘Animal Magic’ to us, and she did not disappoint us.

We were entertained with lots of very amusing stories about Mrs Yates’ family and the animals that have joined the family over the years, from cats and dogs to chickens, cockerels and ducks.

Whilst recounting these tales Mrs Yates produced the most wonderful arrangements set off by excellent mechanics that really brought the designs to life.

We all enjoyed another super evening.

Happiness Is? - Presented by Mrs Gloria Bacior

We had a most delightful evening in March when Mrs Gloria Bacior presented her demonstration ‘Happiness Is?’ to us.

The evening was full of fun and laughter as Mrs Bacior shared with us the things that bring happiness to her life, many of which are related to flowers, gardening, the seasons, holidays and her family. Most of these topics were interspersed with hilarious tales involving her long suffering husband and getting to grips with her own anxiety when taking exams and tests. Each of Mrs Bacior’s favoured activities was beautifully depicted in flowers with lovely colour combinations and designs, which also provided inspiration for members.

With several of our members or their families suffering ill-health in recent weeks, the evening was like a tonic that lifted our spirits and was a wonderful distraction for a couple of hours.

‘Autumn Mists’ with Timothy Kirkham

For our October meeting we welcomed Timothy Kirkham to our club to present his demonstration entitled ‘Autumn Mists’.

The mechanics that Timothy used for his designs were wonderfully rustic ranging from a basket made from chicken wire and moss and a pumpkin to a beautiful piece of weathered bark.

All of them worked perfectly with the lovely autumn colours of flowers and foliage that made up his designs.

Timothy incorporated the traditional autumn festivals of Halloween and Bonfire Night as well as the spiders’ webs picked out on misty mornings and the silvery etchings of frost in the autumn hedgerows.

We enjoyed the evening immensely and hope that Timothy will be back in the not too distant future to share more lovely designs with us.

‘A Night at the Theatre’ with Claire Bond

For our August meeting Claire Bond took us to the theatre for the evening which was a thrilling experience.

Claire was a florist for fifteen years and this is very evident from the speed at which she works. She has now moved on to demonstrating and is planning to begin teaching at workshops in September.

We started with Joseph and Claire interpreted this show with a modern hand-tied design supported by a frame made from shocking pink wire with flowers of equally bright colours including orange and lime green gladioli, orange gerberas, bright pink carnations and bright pink roses with palm and hosta leaves.

Our second show was Annie which Claire depicted with sun flowers tied in a bunch and presented in a mirrored box covered on top with large ivy leaves. Yellow roses and Solidago were added around the base and the design was finished with bow made from jute and gold ribbon.

We then moved on to The Sound of Music and, in particular, My Favourite Things or, more precisely, Claire’s favourite things. This was a striking design in blue and yellow presented in a galvanised metal container. The bright blue of Lysianthus contrasted with yellow roses and pale blue hydrangeas around the base worked perfectly.

Claire’s next design was a stunning interpretation of Chicago in oranges and reds, finished with ostrich feathers and then we visited The Lion King. This was probably the most flamboyant design of the evening and Claire transported us to the jungle with exotic colours and plant material. Her mechanics were stunning even before she added the flowers. Whilst building this design Claire also gave us lots of ideas for using palm leaves including plaiting in different ways and cutting to produce different shapes.

For her final design Claire took us to the set of Grease and the Pink Ladies. This design was more traditional and included several shades of pink with olive and grey-green foliage. However Claire did add a final touch of flamboyant pink feathers!

Butterfly Flowers by Catherine Wickens

Catherine Wickens and her colleague Lauren delighted us at our July meeting with their demonstration entitled ‘Butterfly Flowers’.

Having completed a floristry course together at Moreton Morrell College, both ladies felt they wanted to make use of their hard earned qualification and therefore decided to start a business together, which is based in Wellesbourne.

Memories of her grandmother, and particularly an inherited lead crystal vase with a beautifully engraved butterfly, lead Catherine to suggest the name ‘Butterfly Flowers’ as the name of the business and Lauren was happy to agree.

During the demonstration Catherine described the content of the floristry course which covered both traditional and contemporary design.

It was evident from Catherine’s designs that she is talented at both styles.

She began the demonstration with a very bold contemporary design using orange proteas, phormium leaves and twisted hazel but then moved on to a very traditional basket with a wonderful selection of cottage garden favourites.

The demonstration also featured a stunningly simple design using the most beautiful coloured anthurriums and Catherine ended with a pedestal arrangement in white and green featuring roses, wax flower and white moth orchids, some of which were suspended on wires beneath the pedestal.

All the designs featured a form of butterflies, either in the style of flower, the type of flower that might be enjoyed by butterflies or the mechanics used.

It was a demonstration with something for all our members to enjoy.

Report from Shipston's March meeting

‘Easter Celebrations’ with Sarah Horne

Following a change to our programme, we were delighted to welcome Sarah Horne from Leamington Spa to demonstrate at our March meeting, and what a fabulous evening it turned out to be.

Floristry is very much a part of Sarah’s background, and she began learning her art whilst helping in her mother’s shop, ‘House of Silk’ in Leamington Spa, when still a young girl.

Although the original core business was silk flowers, when Sarah inherited the business at the beginning of the nineties, she made the decision to concentrate on fresh flowers.

Following advice from a marketing consultant, the business name was changed to ‘Sarah Horne Flowers’ and Sarah has not looked back since.

She now has shops in both Leamington and Warwick and is internationally acclaimed for her floristry skills.

Not only that, but she has also won Bronze and Gold medals at Chelsea as well as being an advisor to InterFlora and a member of ‘Pandora’s Box’, a European design group.

Sarah gets inspiration from the European contemporary style of floral art and has attended workshops all over the world to increase her skills and knowledge.

She is renowned for the ‘structures’ she uses in her designs, many of which are formed using twigs. Sarah told us that she often gets some strange looks as she walks through the streets of Leamington with a branch over her shoulder to use in the next creation!

As is typical of contemporary style, Sarah uses only a few flowers in her designs and very little, if any, foliage, but her creative skills are such the end result could be described as a work of art.

For our meeting Sarah produced seven simple but beautiful designs all on the theme of Easter. Her style of delivery is natural and informal, her enthusiasm for her work is infectious and her designs are truly inspiring.
