Welcome to the page for Wall Heath Flower ClubWe are a very friendly club meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. with doors open at 7.00 p.m. at Wall Heath Community Centre, Enville Rd, Wall Heath Membership is open to all ladies and gentlemen over the age of 18 years. the Committee has the power to admit anyone below this age limit into membership under special circumstances. Membership fees are £25 per annum including refreshments while visitors may attend on payment of £5 or such sum to be decided at the Club's AGM.
June - Michael Kemp Around World in 60 MinutesWall Heath Flower Club gave a very warm welcome to Michael Kemp from Wrexham. It was his first time at the club but hopefully not the last. >His Demonstration title was "Around the world in 60 Minutes" His first arrangement was titled "America" and consisted of a metal mesh backdrop with red ribbons entwined and white Chrysanthumums. Next was "Australia" with Lilies, roses and Proteas."Italy" was depicted by using large vases containing Hostas, Green Chrysanths & Anthuriums, "Thailand" followed with White and Yellow Orchids in large bamboo tubes. "Madeira" was a beautiful basket containing pink lilies, cala lilies, peonies and roses. "Iceland" was the ultimate with rocks and a waterfall of delphiniums, roses and gypsophilia. Michael who is a gardener by day and very well travelled had lots of tales to tell us about the countries he had visited.
February A.G.M and Pot Luck SupperThis year is the Golden Anniversary of the club and our A.G.M. went without a hitch with all committee members standing again. To start the 50th celebrations, it was decided to make four of our original members "Life members" This was voted in favour of unanimously. The A.G.M. was followed by a short demonstration by one of our members, Peter Brownjohn who inspired us with representing "Past, Present and Future" arrangements. This was followed by "The Pot Luck Supper" which everyone contributed to. A good social evening was had by all.
Kevin Gunnell - InspirationsAt short notice due to illness Kevin Gunnell kindly stepped in to become our demonstrator for our January meeting. He really began the New Year with a wonderful evening for everyone. His demonstration title remained "Inspirations" as originally planned and he certainly was an inspiration. He began with a large basket with filled Gourds and primroses and then added Avalanche roses. He then told about the large glass vase bought for him by his family. He had long sticks inside the vase and arranged an unusual straight display down the side with Iris, Cherry Brandy roses and Paddy's Pride. He entitled this "Line from my brother in Yorkshire." Next came a Large tin urn which included ferns Shamrock Chrysanths and Anthuriums. Called a "Simple green design" He then bought out a frame work of twigs with a posy pad on top and used Golden Road and roses again. His last arrangement was "A Simple Pedestal" which was an S shape frame. He used Euphorbia, Begonia and Aspidistra Leaves and bright Red Gerberas. He entertained us all evening with his talk of family and flowers and as Dianne Palmer, who gave the "Vote of Thanks" said, Kevin had either given an incredible finish to our demonstrating year, or on the other hand an excellent start our new year, 2010
Wall Heath Flower ClubCHRISTMAS OPEN EVENINGHere Comes Christmas with Lesley SmithThe club ended it's programme of demonstrations for 2009 by hosting Lesley Smith a National Demonstrator from Bolton with "Here comes Christmas" and what an evening to end a very successful year with an audience of 145. Lesley was witty and funny besides telling jokes. Her first arrangement was a large wreath with red carnations, roses and ruscus. She then did her interpretation of an alternative Christmas tree using a large bauble, green carnations and Anastasia chrysanthemums. Next came a "Welcome Vase" for the hallway consisting of a very large urn, Monsera leaves, Anthuriums and gerberas. Her third arrangement was on two reindeers with gold fern, peach carnations and roses and lastly she interpreted a tiered Christmas cake with white Anthuriums, Gerberas and Eskimo roses. The stage was a festive delight at the end and members and visitors feasted on mince pies and coffee whilst the raffle took place.
The floral exhibits by Wall Heath Flower Club for Golden Fanfare Week can also be seen on the Central Region Home page The small one is on the reception and the pedestal is in a room with an exhibition of beautiful glass dresses. The displays are in the Broadfield Glass Museum, Kingswinford which is local to our club.
October Meeting Ann Horsley - Eye of the BeholderFor October's meeting we greeted Ann Horsley with her demonstration of "Eye of the Beholder" Anne's first design was in a large vase incorporating a large piece of driftwood. She used phormiums, euphormia and mahonia. Holly and lovely white Gerbera. Her next was "Box of Delight" on a large oblong tray with lots of textures. Dried materials and oasis balls covered in hay, Dried twigs, hessian, ribbon, sunflower heads and ferns. This made a very unusual design. She also did a design on a tall cane umbrella stand containing fresh sunflowers, jasmine, and pheasant berry. Next she used an acrylic Magazine rack upside down to make a continental design with pink lilies and carnations along with million stars gypsophilia. Her last design was two large arrangements using cheese plant, palms fatsia pink carnations, large peach roses, green anthuriums, red gerbera and chrysanths. The whole stage was a riot of colour as in "Eye of the Beholder"
September 2009 Flower Power with Glenice YatesAn evening with a difference, this was Septembers meeting with demonstrator Glenice Yates. Her title was "Flower Power". Glenice is a very entertaining person who would make a good comedienne. She entertained us all evening with the exploits of her family whilst arranging numerous displays. She began with an arrangement of yellow gerberas, roses and carnations on a plinth followed by an urn starting with a ring of choicia then a triangle of white chrysanths, orange roses and carnations. She then made arrangements that fitted around a working wishing well. She then demonstrated a continental design using a picket fence. All these were joined by several "ones done earlier." At the end of the evening the stage was cleared of her working table to reveal a lovely garden as everything blended together and include a wishing well with flowing water, twinkling lights etc. This really was a very different staging and looked splendid.
WALL HEATH JULY 2009 MEETINGFor July's meeting we welcomed Robin Cobb for the first but certainly not the last time. Robin is certainly to be recommended as he entertained the audience with his sense of humor about his life and his love of his allotment and flowers. His title demonstration was called "The village Green" and his first arrangement was "The Village Bus" . This contained pink carnations and Lilac Singapore Lilies. Secondly came the "Morris Men containing green chrysanths, white alstomaria, cream stocks and yellow chrysanths, Then followed "The Gymkhana" which was full of colour "Beer" followed with two large jugs and white carnations flowing. "The cafe" was depicted by a picnic basket .and the final arrangement was the inevitable "Roadwork's" Red carnations, lilies, purple anthuriums and salmon gerberas. We all had a wonderful evening and look forward to our August social meeting which will be a visit to Burlington Gate Farm, Hereford.
WALL HEATH JUNE 2009 MEETINGFor our June meeting we welcomed Nigel Wyles for the first time to our club. All found him to very knowledgeable about the history of Clarice Cliffe, his title being "The Bizarre World of Clarice Cliffe" His first arrangement was the title Blue Fir with blue rings, agapanthus with purple Hebe and pink anthuriums in pale blue vase. Secondly the title "Daises" which was an all round arrangement, orange and purple gerbras and alcamillmollis. His titles Windbells which contained longi lilies and bells of Ireland and orange carnations and Autumn followed which was a triangular shape containing beautiful cherry brandy roses. He then talked about Westminster Abbey and NAFAS golden anniversary.and displayed yellow sunflowers and weaved leaves on a wire frame. Lastly his title was "Cubis" in a peach vase with Foxtail lilies, Liatra, green anthuriums, gerbera and green carnations. Almost all arrangements had a fascinating Clarice Cliffe piece of pottery. Everyone enjoyed the evening very much and look forward to seeing Nigel again sometime.
WALL HEATH MAY 2009 MEETINGElizabeth Bacon entertained us with her interpretation of the title "Retro" She began with a traditional basket with garden material and roses. Secondly she used two figures and arranged a light open triangle.She then used a picture frame for her interpretation of Dutch Flemish. Then came modern Japan . Quick and easy with bamboo and King Proteas, twisted hazel and hosta leaves. a continental design next and then contempory design. Finally a traditional pedestal with Foxtail lilies, large lilies and roses.and also using a drape. This was a fascinating and entertaining evening with very different shapes and designs.
WALL HEATH APRIL 2009 MEETINGApril's meeting was Elizabeth Graham with her title "Colour, Concept and Canvas" What a wonderful evening we all had. Elizabeth started with the artist Rafael and arranged a Blue,and pink arrangement in a large urn. Next was a Van Gough with sunflowers in a pot. The next was a tropical arrangement then a Matisse which was very colourful and lastly a Monet which was tall and horizontal containing liatris, dark orchids, Aqua roses, alstramaria. The stage was a riot of colour and Elizabeth was extremely interesting and so inspiring to even non flower arrangers of the club.
WALL HEATH MARCH 2009 MEETINGOur first meeting of the year after our A.G.M. was a great success. New chairman Linda Fellows opened the evening by introducing local florist and flower arranger Andrew Lloyd who is an Area chairman. The demonstration was called "As mad as a March?" He opened with orchids on and inside a glass vase, Other arrangements included Caribbean exotics, Mother Day tea tray with spring flowers and colours. The stage at the end of the evening was a splendour of different flowers, perfumes and colours. Programme secretary Dianne Palmer gave the Vote of thanks and said that everyone had had a thoroughly wonderful evening The club at the moment is gaining strength with 64 members this month alone and 20 visitors.which we hope to improve on.
WALL HEATH JANUARY 2009 MEETINGWe started 2009 with a difference, by hosting Jane Pugh at the club to both arrange flowers and sing for us. She started with a green Irish flower arrangement which included Shamrock chrysanths and bells of Ireland and sang two Irish songs. Secondly she arranged a 1920's style arrangement and thirdly a waltzes . Both accompanied by songs to suit and which the audience could join in. Lastly a Scottish arrangement with eucalyptus and sea holly, Red roses, lilies and Carnations, along with two more Scottish songs. President Jean Bate gave the vote of thanks and said" We all have had a very entertaining and uplifting evening which was good with all doom and gloom about at the moment."
WALL HEATH OPEN MEETING JOHN CHENNELL - CHRISTMAS IS COMINGOur November Open Evening with John Chennell was a great success with our hall being almost full to capacity. John was very entertaining and his creations were to visualised on a smaller scale in our halls, on sideboards and walls. He gave us some very good tips and ideas for Christmas. The vote of thanks was given by our chairman Jean Caskey. Our next meeting will be 27th January 2009 with Jane Pugh.
PURELY FOR PLEASURE WITH MARGARET ECCLESTONMargaret Eccleston visited our club for the October meeting and her title of "Purely for Pleasure" lived up to it's name. Margaret was still as enthusiastic about her flowers as her previous visit around 5 years ago. She kept everyone entertained with her talk of her flower arranging in different locations. Her arrangements were all very different and her flowers and use of colours beautiful. All who won the arrangements in the raffle were extremely pleased. We are all now looking forward to our Open Evening with John Chennell and his title of "It's Christmas Again".
A day out at Consall Hall GardensOur August' Social day out to Consall Hall Landscape Gardens, Stoke -on - Trent was a truly wonderful outing despite having to dodge the rain showers 50 members and friends had an extremely enjoyable day out which included lunch. The tour of the gardens was very informative and we all came back with lovely photos and some good ideas. The outing is to be highly recommended.
Seasonal Pastimes with Carol Farmer September 2008The September meeting at Wall Heath was Carol Farmer demonstrating "Seasonal Pastimes". Carol did 6 arrangements all very unusual and used foliage from the garden with some very colourful flowers. The vote of thanks was given by Val Plant and all who won the arrangements in the raffle were extremely pleased. .
